My Transport Mode

Quick UI/UX Design Challenge 2018: Creating an application that addresses the problem of climate change.

My Transport Mode is aimed at encouraging users to adopt sustainable modes of transportation.

Context & The Problem

With growing global concerns over the amount of CO2 emissions and the increasing densities in major cities, this application (My Transport Mode) aims to help users understand how their preferred daily modal choices impact the environment.

The inspiration for this application design stems from the hope that the information presented will encourage more individuals to use both public and active transport. The intent is to encourage these modal choices as they limit the volume of CO2 emissions emitted and helps to encourage the city to develop a more liveable, sustainable and healthier urban environments. Furthermore, the reduction in the use of the private automobile for transportation will help ease city traffic congestion issues.

Application Concept & Existing Competitors

My Transport Mode aims to utilize elements of gamification to encourage users to adopt other modes of transportation. For example, the digital experience provides time-sensitive challenges to help facilitate the user’s motivations to partake in more sustainable transport. The digital service is further supported by game mechanics such as the use of badges, points and rewards to facilitate users’ motivation to continue with the experience, and to encourage behavioural changes.

While there are other popular digital services available to encourage individuals to partake in active transport (i.e. Carrot (now Optimity) and Pokemon Go for walking), it is uncommon to find applications that focus solely on modes of transport. The application targets the average person that commutes to work on a daily basis. It will simply require the user to select their preferred mode of transport and the application will average their daily travel distance through GPS tracking. The application will then generate an estimated volume of CO2 emissions generated by the selected mode of transport.

WireFrames & Hi-Fi Mockup

Based on initial feedback from potential users, the application underwent several design iterations to address user needs. Changes that were implemented included the addition of a page to allow the comparative view between the average distance travelled and the volume of emissions produced based on the various modal options. User feedback was also used to improve the icons, and textual elements were modified for better overall visual balance.
